DERMATOMYOSITIS: Inflammation & Weakness of Muscles and Skin
🔅 DERMATOMYOSITIS
– This is a condition that causes inflammation and weakness in the muscles and skin. It is a type of autoimmune disease that affects the connective tissues in the body.
– The cause of dermatomyositis is unknown, but it may be related to genetic factors, environmental factors, infections, or cancers.
– The symptoms of dermatomyositis include: muscle pain and stiffness (especially in the shoulders, neck, hips, and thighs), difficulty swallowing or breathing, fatigue, fever, weight loss, skin rash (especially on the face, eyelids, knuckles, elbows, knees, or chest), nail changes (such as red or purple spots), or calcium deposits under the skin.
– The diagnosis of dermatomyositis is based on the medical history, physical examination, blood tests (such as creatine kinase or anti-Jo-1 antibodies), muscle biopsy (taking a tissue sample from the muscle), or electromyography (measuring the electrical activity of the muscles).
– The treatment of dermatomyositis involves medications (such as corticosteroids, immunosuppressants, or antimalarials), physical therapy (to improve muscle strength and function), or surgery (to remove calcium deposits or tumors).
– The prevention of dermatomyositis is not possible in most cases, but it may help to avoid sun exposure, wear sunscreen and protective clothing, quit smoking, and follow the doctor's instructions.
– The dietary recommendations for dermatomyositis are not specific, but they may include: eating a balanced and high-protein diet that provides enough calories, vitamins, and minerals; avoiding foods that may cause allergies or inflammation (such as gluten or dairy); and taking supplements if needed.
